Obituary for Calvin Smith, Sr.

Calvin Smith Sr. was born on March 25th, 1922 in Bridgeport, CT. to the late Elder Dempsey Smith and Clara Ellen Smith. Calvin had four siblings: sisters, Dempsey and Carnetta Smith and brothers, Johnny and Robert Smith.

In 1950 Calvin wed Ms. Pearl Jean Smith in Denver, CO. Calvin knew that Pearl was going to be his wife the moment he laid eyes on her. Consequently, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on December 20, 2000. Together they are survived by four children: Carol, Calvin Jr., Leona and Edwin Smith who blessed them with six grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family that will lovingly cherish his memory.

Calvin was a self-educated man with many life experiences under his belt. He understood the value of a formal education and diligently supported his wife’s educational aspirations and encouraged her to enroll in Metropolitan State College where she obtained her Bachelor’s Degree and the University of Northern Colorado where she achieved her Master’s Degree in Early Education.

Calvin entered the Army on March 20, 1946 and ultimately achieved the rank of Corporal in October 1948. Calvin retired from the armed forces on March 19, 1950 after many years of distinguished service. Calvin was a truck driver, a skilled repairman, and an RTD bus driver for 22 years before ultimately owning his own landscaping business that he started after retiring from RTD.

Aside from his family, Calvin passionately loved the Denver Broncos. He and Pearl were season ticket holders from the organization’s inception. Later, when the Rockies came to town he was a loyal fan until his passing.

Calvin is now walking along the path to be reunited with his beloved Pearl, who preceded him in death. God has afforded him a peaceful transition through the golden gates of heaven, so let no one sorrow as he walks through.

Dad, there are no words that will adequately say, how deeply you will be missed by all.
