Obituary for LaShonda T. Scott

LaShonda Tanice Scott, better known as Shon to friends and family, was born Feb 10, 1974 in Kansas City, MO to Antoinette Scott and Jan Henry. She was the eldest of four girls. The family moved to Denver, CO during her elementary school years and she attended Palmer Elementary, Cole Middle School, and graduated from Manual High School.

While she never had any children of her own she was a doting caregiving aunt to many nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors and any child in need. She was quick to defend and protect the kids from their parents because in her eyes, the kids could do no wrong. She would often say “Don’t you touch that baby!” or “They can do what they want when they’re with me.”
She lived a simple life and enjoyed spending time with her friends and family whether it be just hanging out or activities like bowling or karaoke. She loved watching horror movies and Sci-Fi classics like, Sharknado and all the sequels. She was also an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan. A huge music lover, she listened to everything from old school R&B to gangsta hip-hop.

Shon had a very caring heart and never met a stranger. She welcomed everyone with open arms and never judged or held a grudge long. She was a peacemaker who wanted everyone to get along because family meant everything to her. Shon demonstrated incredible strength of body, mind and spirit, while dealing with illness for several years with minimal complaints, not wanting to be a burden to her family. Even while sick, she was the one many relied on for a kind word, a non judgmental ear or even a small favor.

On March 7, 2018 Shon passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. She leaves many family members to cherish her memory; her father, Jan L. Henry; three sisters: Angela R. Westbrook, Tameka R. (Jonathan) McMillan, Lavshaunique D. Henry; her beloved nieces and nephews: Shonnetta R. (Joseph) Estrada, T’Keyah A. Henry, I’Zayah L. Henry, Marcus D. Westbrook, Julian E. McMillan; aunts: Monica Coulter, Cynthia Scott, Diane Henry, and her uncle Anthony K. Scott; several cousins and a host of other family and friends. Shon will be deeply missed.

I’m Free
Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free
I’m following the path God laid for me.
I took His hand when I heard Him call,
I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day,
To laugh, to love, to work or play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way.
I found that peace at the close of day.

If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss.
Ah, yes, these things, I too, will miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow.
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life’s been full, I’ve savored much,
Good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief,
Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief.

Lift up your hearts and share with me.
God wanted me now; He set me free.
