Obituary for Lonie Joy Robertson

The definition of joy is a feeling of great happiness, exuberance, and rejoicing. Our "Joy" Lonie Joy Robertson was born on July 6, 1954 in Muskegon, Michigan as the fourth of eight children to Jack and Doris Mattox.
As a child she attended Lindbergh Elementary where she met her future husband Anthony Lee Robertson. At the age of 10, his initial attempts to woo the seven-year old Lonie were thwarted by her father who thought the two were too young to date. They remained friends until Lonie's senior year of high school when Anthony attempted to renew their courtship. They fell in love and were married on Christmas Day 1974. Their wedding ceremony is still considered one of the biggest events in Muskegon Heights' history.
Lonie always wanted to be a mother. Due to childhood ailments, doctors told her that she would never have children. But in 1977, three years after marriage, she miraculously became pregnant and gave birth to two healthy twin boys Anthony Lee II and Oronde Camara whom she always referred to as her miracle babies. This family of four eventually moved from Battle Creek, Michigan to Thousand Oaks, California in 1981.
Lonie Joy always valued education. In addition to attending Lindbergh Elementary, she attended Muskegon Heights Central Junior High School followed by Muskegon Heights High School where she graduated in 1972. She was always a great student which helped her earn admittance into Western Michigan University and Eastern Michigan University. She later took courses at UCLA and Pepperdine University. Lonie graduated from Moorpark College earning her Associates Degree in Business Administration with High Honors in 1995.
Working hard was always an integral part of Lonie's life. Her dedication to her task and superior work ethic was demostrated as she worked at General Telephone followed by Lumermans Bank, Burals, and Citicorp TTI; driving back and forth to Santa Monica while simultaneously working at Robinson's May at night during the holiday season to ensure that Christmas was always special for her boys. After moving to Denver in 2005, Lonie Joy worked at Convergys before retiring in 2014.
Despite being diagnosed with multiple ailments throughout her lifetime, the enduring fighter continued to live life unwavering to her faith in the Lord and her persistence to overcome health challenges. As a child, Lonie was constantly in and out of the hospital. However, doctors could never diagnose her illness. In 1993, she was formally diagnosed with Multple Sclerosis which continually showed its affects throughout the remainder of her life. In 2003, her kidneys unexpectedly failed due to a rare airbourne disease and she was given only hours to live. Not only did she survive, but she amazed her doctors by defeating their prognosis of a lifetime of dialysis, in only a matter of months. In March 2014, Lonie was diagnosed with Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer and was given hours to live. Once again she beat the odds and fought for four more years. During this time she never complained and chose to focus on her faith, blessings, and God's favor.
Lonie enjoyed many things in life including gardening, exercising, and singing. She often thought of others through her own battles and joined the Journey of Hope where she took time from her own treatment to give support to other patients with cancer and their caregivers. She was an avid sports fan who loved the Lakers and University of Michigan Football and Basketball. Go Blue!
Lonie Joy is preceded by her parents Jack and Doris Mattox. She leaves cherished memories to her husband of 44 years Anthony Lee Robertson, two sons Anthony Lee II and Oronde Camara, step-daughter Shanika Lampkin, nine grandchildren, four brothers, three sisters, and a host of otherfamily and friends.
