Obituary for Lloyd C. Shelton, Jr.

Lloyd Chesterfield Shelton Jr. was born February 18, 1931 in Des Moines Iowa to parents Lloyd C. Shelton Sr. and Grace Bentley. He grew up in Des Moines and his family moved to Denver in 1947. a graduate of Manual High School in Denver. In 1949, Lloyd served in the U.S. Navy for 4 years and is a veteran of the Korean War.

During his career, Lloyd worked with the United States Postal Service for 34 years. He retired in 1986 as Assistant Postmaster in Littleton, Colorado. He enjoyed playing on the Montclair Pot office baseball team and was a member of Campbell Chapel A.M.E. Church, the Kingsmen Social Club, the Owls Club and a member of the Quick Draw Club . Lloyd was an avid skier and member of the Sipper and Sliders Ski Club and the National Brotherhood of Skiers. Not only was he skilled in carpentry, he was well known for the care he put in to keep his yard and home in immaculate condition. Lloyd was easy going, loved traveling and good music, especially jazz, and was a keen fisherman. He and his friends liked to hunt with some success, some not. He was known for his quick wit and sense of humor and he loved to spend time with his family and friends. In his spare time, Lloyd loved to entertain his family and friends was a math tutor to students in the Denver Public Schools. He worked 20 years in the community as a supporter and advocate for Senator Gloria Tanner. He was always willing to help people, ready to teach anyone, especially children, and often filled in for those parents who could not be present. All the kids in the neighborhood would come to him to fix their bikes, toys and any other broken items.

Lloyd was diagnosed in 2013 with Parkinson’s Disease and mild Dementia and fought hard to combat the conditions. After fighting the good fight, he transitioned on March 12, 2019 in his home and in the company of his family.

Lloyd is survived by his loving wife of 63 ½ years, Jean Evelyn Shelton, his two children Karlya Shelton-Benjamin and Kyle Shelton, son-in-law Omar Benjamin, sister-in-law Edith Shelton and Bernice Pierce, brother-in-law James Pierce and children, grandchildren Tanya Garlington, Carlton Capiti and Chè Benjamin, great-grand child, Toddera Garlington-Martin, great-great grand children Zsa Zsa, Chase and Charlie Capiti and many nieces and nephews. He was godfather to Rhoda Holliman, Dominique Green-Marquez and Marissa Ford. Lloyd is pre-deceased by his grandmother Katherine Shelton, parents, brother Robert L. Shelton, sister Barbara Jean Williams, daughter Linda, grandson Kyle and brother-in-law, William “Billy” Pierce.
