Obituary for Edward Bell Dillard Jr.

Edward B. Dillard, Jr. was born on September 20, 1929 in Shreveport, Louisiana to the union of Tommie and Edward B. Dillard, Sr.
As a child he enjoyed visiting his grandparents on their farm during school break and also visiting his cousin, Mattie and her brothers, Ira, Nick and Jesse Waller at their home. The family moved to Oklahoma City during the depression where he attended school and graduated from Douglas High School in 1948. While in school he excelled in the music department. Edward was in the band, chorus and the orchestra. He had a desire to be a music teacher like his idol, Mrs. Breaux.
“Sonny”, as the family all called him, was baptized at the age of 12 and served as a junior usher a Tabernacle Baptist Church.
He was also a bugler in the Boy Scouts.
After graduating in 1948 he attended Denver University to pursue a music career.
In 1950 he met and married Marjorie Green. To this union 3 girls were born; Sandra D’Jai True-Kirk, Linda Journey and Donna Bull.
Edward worked at G.S.A. at the Federal Center from 1953-1955. He later became the first black assistant manager for the Safeway store located at 34th and Downing from 1955-1963. In 1963 he went to work at Denver Public Works. He started as a laborer and worked thru the ranks to become supervisor. He was one of thirteen employees of the year in 1992. He enjoyed his work and made many friends. To his friends he was known as “Big Ed”. After 35 years of working, Edward retired from the Cherry Creek station in 1999. Ed enjoyed an active social life.
In 1967 Edward married Marlene Brown and blended three more children, Evangela, Jesse and Papa to the family.
Edward and Marlene joined Pilgrim Rest Church in August of 1967. Rev. Lewis was pastor and Ed joined the choir and served on the financial committee prior to becoming a Deacon. Ed served the church in many capacities.
Ed is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Margie Coates.
He leaves to continue the celebration of life, his wife, Marlene; his children, Sandra, Linda and Donna; 10 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 7 great- great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
