Obituary for Dorothy Livingston

Dorothy was born in the sleepy south Texas town of Rosenberg, a pass through for the Santa Fe, Southern Pacific, & Southern Pacific’s Victoria Division Railroads. She grew up with her brothers Rolle and Thomas, her mother Jimmie, and father Robert. She fondly remembers taking lunch from the dry cleaners where her mother worked, to her father who had a part time job as a projectionist at the local movie house. She attended Roosevelt grade school and junior high school until afforded the opportunity to attend St. Peter Claver Academy in San Antonio as a board student. After graduation, she was invited to visit her Aunt Bernice and cousins in Springfield, Illinois. Soon, she would enroll in St. John's School of Nursing there and graduate their program. Only Dorothy and 2 other Black students completed the rigorous training. After meeting and marrying the love of her life, Rudolph, she began work as the office nurse for Bob Olstad, in nearby Decatur. There, she gave birth to two children, Mark Douglas, and Julie Ann. After Rudy was accepted to the Master's in Personnel Management program at the University of Denver, the family moved west. Both Rudy and Dorothy steadily advanced their careers while adding 2 more children, Cathy Lynn and John Christopher. Dorothy was a pioneer in Women's Health care, as she attained the Women's Health Care Practitioner Certification from Harbor General Hospital near Los Angeles. When she returned, she was able to help establish clinics for underserved communities. She worked at St. Luke's Hospital and at Denver's East Side Health Center. She then began a long and fruitful affiliation with Denver General Hospital, now Denver Health, retiring after 24 years of dedicated service. She maintained her commitment to wellness in her community and beyond as part of the Health Care Committee at Cure d'Ars Catholic Church, and the Center for African American Health making sure parishioners, especially seniors had information and access to proper health care.
She always had time for a friend.
She liked to travel and shop and dance and sing. She especially liked her visits to Italy and Spain. She shopped at Harrods in London, and in the markets of Old San Juan. She enjoyed Fiesta in San Antonio every April, and the Santa Fe Opera every August, with her best friend Rose Baker. She enjoyed a good laugh and fellowship with her "breakfast club", after 8:00 a.m. mass on Sunday. She was a fixture at the Park Hill Golf Club, and yes, she did play a little golf. Her kindness and dedication to seeing others happy will be missed. We loved her ability to love, even in unkind circumstances.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Rudy and brothers Rolle and Thomas Edward, and is survived by her sister Sandra Kay, children, Mark Livingston, Julie Ann Livingston, Cathy Livingston, John Livingston and Daughter-In-Law, Shannon Livingston, her Grandchildren, Cameron Barnewall, Jordan Richardson, her husband James Richardson, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
We miss her already.
"Now, you understand just why my head's not bowed. I don't shout or jump about or have to talk real loud. When you see me passing, it ought to make you proud.

I say, it's in the click of my heels, the bend of my hair, the palm of my hand, the need for my care,

'Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenal woman
That's me"

To us, Mom, that's who you are. Rest in Paradise
