Obituary for Cora Horton

Cora Ella Keeling Horton was born February 8, 1936, in Willow Grove, Texas to Leonard Keeling and Cleo Brown Keeling, the oldest of seven children. She attended school in Waco, Texas. After high school, Cora left Waco, Texas and came to Denver, Colorado following her cousin Lela Mae Prentis Steele and Clarice Prentis Davis.
She had been hired for a "line-in" job and worked for Buster's BBQ part-time for extra money.
She met and married Buddy Gail Horton, Sr., and to this union six children were born: Buddy Jr., Sherwin, Onarita (Rita), Undra (Quickie), Rochelle (Shelli), and Baby Johnnie Horton. She raised her grandson Albert (Buzzy) Horton as her son after the death of his mother Onarita (Rita) Horton. Cora was devoted to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Her children saw her as a loving mother and a strong woman. Cora was a bookkeeper and an accountant. She kept up with current events and read the newspaper almost daily. She was always taking continuing education classes to improve herself and her skills.
Cora loved to sew; she could look at a garment and replicate it without pattern. She was very talented and sang in a gospel group with her cousin Lela Mae Prentis Steele, and they traveled around Colorado singing for the Lord.
Cora played the piana in various churches and sang. She had a beautiful voice. Cora would talk about the Lord and His goodness. Cora was a previous memeber of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, Pastor Willie C. Jones, where she played for the Inspirational Choir, Wayside Community Temple COGIC, Pastor Charles Scurles, and By Faith Apostolic Church, Pastor Hope Finnell.
She faithfully attended services in the nursing home as health permitted. Her cousin Hope has fond memories of Cora teaching her to drive a stick shift cr at age 10 on a dirt road, sewing clothes with her, babysitting her children, and singing songs as she played the piano. The late Jack Davis Jr. would teach her cords and music as they sang and played all kinds of music. One of Cora's favorite songs was "His Eye Is On The Sparrow."
Cora endured seeing her loved ones precede her in death. It is a true saying "there is no pain like losing a child" and Cora lost Baby Johnnie Horton, Onarita Horton, and Sherwin Horton. A husband, Buddy G. Horton Sr. (Divorced), her mother Cleo Keeling, father, Leonard Keeling, sister LaVonne Mack, and brothers, Alex McKinney and Leon Keeling.
Cora passed this life January 1, 2019, and left to cherish her memory a son, Buddy G. Horton Jr., daughter, Rochelle (Shelli) Horton, her grandson raised as a son, Albert (Buzzy) R. Horton, a brother Edward (Precious) Keeling, two sisters, Janice McKinney Reed, and Palma Sue (Ed) Keeling Sanks, six grandchildren, Khadasi Horton, An-Rae De-jon Horton, Michael Jermain Horton, Za-Keem Olashawan Horton, and Printona Horton; eight great-grandchildren, her devoted cousing Hope Johnson Finnell, and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
