Obituary for Cheryl Elaine Crump

Cheryl Elaine crump was born on November 14, 1944, in long beach, ca to solon Edgar hall and Eleanor Juanita hall. At an early age, the family relocated to Denver, Colorado where she received her spiritual, academic and social growth. In 1954, Cheryl accepted Christ as her personal savior, and was baptized by Rev Liggins at Zion Baptist Church, where she faithfully served on the children’s usher board and choir.
Cheryl was educated in the Denver public school system, and in 1963 she graduated from manual high school with the honors of being voted homecoming queen, head cheerleader and most friendly. During the fall of that year, she enrolled at Colorado state college in Greely, co as a nursing major. She was the first african-american cheerleader at Colorado state college.
In June 1965, Cheryl married ray n. Peterson. To that union was born their beloved son, Sean n. Peterson. The following year she worked as a teller and manager of new accounts at boulevard national bank, in Denver.
Cheryl married James Robert Crump, Macedonia Baptist church in May of 1972. She was active in the young adult choir, womans day service, and served as a tutor for elementary-aged children. One year later, she received a B.S. degree in biology from the university of colorado-denver.
From 1974-1987, Cheryl held professional positions at united bank of Denver, mile high united way and martin-Marietta corporation. During that timeframe, she was a member of the Denver brunch bunch and was initiated into her beloved sorority, alpha kappa alpha sorority, Inc.
Cheryl relocated to Washington, dc in 1987 as a senior buyer in the purchasing department of martin-Marietta. Later that year, Cheryl and her husband joined Mt. Sinai Baptist church (dc) where she was a very active member; serving as the chairperson for the 1995 women’s day service, and mistress of ceremony for the annual usher’s day for Washington, DC Cheryl also proudly founded and financed mt. Sinai’s liturgical dance ministry. Notably, Cheryl has been a keynote women’s day speaker at new hope Baptist, Wichita, KS.
From 1992 to 2003, Cheryl worked contract managerial roles at Howard University and Unisys Corporation. In 2003, she was offered an extraordinary position as a senior contracts manager for AT&T Government Solutions, and negotiated the terms and conditions of contracts valued in the millions of dollars.
Cheryl and her husband returned to Denver in 2014 to provide care for her late mother, while Cheryl continued to work virtually. The following year, she and her husband joined new hope Baptist church, where Cheryl served on the pastoral courtesies committee, until she had health issues.
In September 2016, Cheryl was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), commonly called Lou Gehrig’s disease. After 13 years with AT&T, she was placed on disability. Cheryl’s last public recognition came last month at the 48th annual Colorado gospel music academy hall of fame, when she and her husband were presented the 2018 dynamic duo award.
Cheryl, affectionately referred to as “queen sugar” by her husband, family and friends, enjoyed her life. She embarked on numerous cruises and trips to Europe, was passionate about her family, and took great joy in hosting holiday celebrations. Cheryl was an avid reader (listening to audio books) with Sandra Brown and Trevor Noah being recent favorites, and she took great pride in creating a warm home. In all respects, she lived life to the fullest.
Cheryl was predeceased by her father, Solon Edgar Hall; her mother, Eleanor Williams; and a sister, Carlotta Belmore.
Left to cherish her memory: James R. Crump, Jr(husband), Sean N. Peterson(Stacy), son, Marilina Green(sister), Carole Curtis-Chism(Birt), sister; Edgar Hall(brother) and sisters: Karen Pralour and Susan Hines. Brother-n-laws: Dr. Lee Crump(Lavern), Rev Harold Crump(Evetta), Bruce Crump, Rev Barry Crump(Roslind), and Dale Crump(Lisa), sister-n-laws: “Al” Madison(Greg) and Roberta Steen. Nieces: Deadra Green(Rochelle) and Kimberly Smith(Brendon), Christina. Nephews: Robert Green, Solon Flowers (Stephanie). Great niece and nephews: Kennedi Smith, Chase and Jared Green and Brendan Smith. (special friend) Lonnie Porter, special girlfriends/bffs: Dr. Marcia Clinkscales, Dr. Dorothy Hayden-Watkins, Peggy Jackson, Kathy Way, Jessie Harris, Janet Adams and the honorable Janet Buckner.
