Obituary for Mother Luella Pope Young

Luella Pope Young was born in Mart, Texas on Monday, July 31st, 1923. She was the daughter of Johnny Calvin and Ethel Pope. Luella was the fifth child out of fourteen. Her siblings include(d), her brothers Raymond, Willie, Lee, Marion (Cat), Johnny Calvin, Bobby-Ray and Roosevelt and sisters, Mattie, Johnnie Mae, Edna (Doll), Minnie (Sug), Ruby (Bear) and Jessie Ruth. Growing up Luella and her siblings named their childhood home “Blue Heaven”, where they all walked 3 miles to and from school in Cameron, Texas.
At the young age of 17, she met and married a young man, by the name of Marvin Jenkins, on December 26th, 1940. During this union, they were blessed with a baby girl Doris Marie.
The matriarch of the family, Luella Pope found herself on a journey to Denver, Colorado on January 1, 1960. Before she lived in Dallas, Texas for 13 years. She’s was a faithful and active member of Holy Trinity Church of God in Christ for 67 years under the leadership of Pastor Samuel Feaster, Elder James Fennel, and Elder Lamont Black. God truly blessed her. She loved to sing and write poetry. One of her favorite songs to sing was “Blessed Assurance”. As a young girl, Luella’s mother travelled with her and her sisters around town to different churches to sing. Luella was a praise service conductor at her church.
On September 19th, 2013, Luella was recognized by the board of education by the state of Colorado as an exemplary volunteer at Columbine Beacon School for 17 years, and 19 years as a foster grandparent with the Volunteers of America. Thereby bringing great honor and pride to the community in Denver Public School and the city of Denver.
She enjoyed cooking and spending time with family. All of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren called her “Grammie.” She had the best stories about her childhood and could recall stories of her life with the many friends, family and acquaintances that left their mark on her life.
Luella, with her daughter, found themselves in a city where they began a long life. Luella was the root to the family in which she prayed constantly for. She put her trust in the living God that directed her steps. Luella's life was blessed with seven grandchildren that kept her witty and was always sending out clear messages on how they needed to be saved. With her as a root, she loved her grandsons and seemed at times, to love them with a love unstopping. Through her baby daughter that stuck alongside with her mother, watched as the growth of the family took off. By the time she turned around, she had loved her only daughter along with seven grandchildren with one that proceeded her in passing. Seven grandchildren turned into seventeen great grandchildren and made its way into twenty two great-great grandchildren. At her going home journey, she was surrounded with grand, great grand, and great, great grandchildren who were just enjoying the times that were shared with their “Grammie”. She slipped away from us on Nov. 11, 2017 at 1:27pm. God Bless you Grammie, we all miss you and love you.

You Can’t Hurt Me Anymore

I did my service the best I could
But sometimes I was not understood
It cause me many pains and woe
But you can’t hurt me anymore

I know my God was in the plan
And maybe you don’t understand
I have finish this race here below
So you can’t hurt me anymore

I will wake up in Glory by and by
To live with Je-sus Christ on high
All fears and sorrow I have left behind
With joy and love and peace of mind

I knew one day I had to go
My heart grew weak
My steps got slow

Dear Love ones I leave here below
For you can’t hurt me anymore

I thank my God for his saving grace
When I shall see him face to face
And be with the saints on the other shore
Where you can’t hurt me anymore
