Obituary for Jerry Lee Hayes

Jerry Lee Hayes experienced an amazing life which began when he was born on June 23, 1935 in El Dorado, Kansas. He was the only child born to the union of Goldie M. and Joel H. Hayes.

When he was in 8th grade, Jerry wrote a letter to the Howard University College of Dentistry informing them that he wanted to attend dental school there. Years later, his dream would come true.

Before attending dental school, Jerry excelled in academics and athletics at El Dorado High School. Later, he would be inducted into the El Dorado Baseball Sports Hall of Fame. Jerry received a full scholarship to attend Butler County Community College where he played on the baseball team.

Thereafter, he was awarded a scholarship to play football at Kansas State where he became a star running back. He also played baseball at Kansas State as a third baseman. After his undergraduate studies, Jerry received a full academic scholarship to Howard University School of Dentistry.

While at Howard University College of Dentistry, Dr. Hayes graduated second in his class. He also received the Outstanding Oral Surgeon Award and was awarded membership in the Phi Beta Kappa Society. He moved to Colorado where he practiced dentistry for 46 years. He served the community by working free of charge, and with the East Side Health Center for many years. His years of dedication and service were acknowledged when Mayor Hickenlooper commemorated that there would be Dr. Jerry L. Hayes Day in Denver.

Dr. Hayes also served in the U.S. Army where he secured a prestigious internship given to only 2 soldiers a year. He also wrote scientific dental papers for the National Institute of Health. In addition, Dr. Hayes was the president of the Clarence Holmes Society and a board member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Dr. Hayes was a devoted husband and father and he coached his children in numerous sports and activities. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed golfing with the Mile High Sandbaggers and Mile High Golf Club. Dr. Hayes was also a passionate Denver Broncos fan and had season tickets from 1962 until 2013.

Dr. Hayes is predeceased by his parents Joel and Goldie Hayes, his wife Shirley, and his son Brian. He will be fondly remembered by his son Chris, his daughter Stephanie, and his grandchildren: Armound Hayes, Daziah Outlaw-Hayes, Arianna Canada and Christopher Hayes, Jr. He will be deeply missed.

A Soldier
I am a soldier in the army of God. The Lord Jesus Christ is my commanding officer, the Holy Bible is my code of conduct. Faith, Prayer and the Word are my weapons of warfare. I have been taught by the Holy Spirit, trained by experience, tried by adversity and tested by fire. I am a volunteer in this army and I am enlisted for eternity. I will either retire in this army or die in this army, but I will not get out, sell out, be talked out of or be pushed out. I am faithful, reliable, capable and dependable. When my God needs me, I am there. I am a soldier, I am not a baby. I do not need to be pampered, petted, picked up or pepped up. No one has to call me, remind me, write me, visit me, entice me or lure me. I am a Soldier! I am not a wimp. I am in place saluting my King, obeying His orders, praising His name, and building His Kingdom. No one has to send me flowers, gifts, food, cards, candy or give me handouts. I do not need to be cuddled, cradled, cared for or catered to. I am committed. I cannot have my feelings hurt bad enough to turn around. I cannot be discouraged enough to turn aside. I cannot lose enough to cause me to quit. When Jesus called me into this army, I had nothing. If I end up with nothing, I will come out even. My God supplies all of my needs. I am more than a conquer and I can do all things through Jesus who strengthens me. Devils cannot defeat me, people cannot disillusion me, weather cannot weary me, sickness cannot stop me. Battles cannot beat me, money cannot buy me, government cannot silence me and hell cannot handle me. EVEN DEATH CANNOT DESTROY ME. When my Commander calls me from the battle field, he will promote me to captain and Heaven is where I shall stand. All glory to the God of my life and His Holy Son Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior.
