Obituary for Deacon George F. Parrish

For I am ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, and I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness.
The sun rose on the life of George F. Parrish on March 14, 1940, in Clarksville, Tennessee. The youngest of three children, his family later moved to Evansville, Indiana in 1941. He was cared for by his Aunt Josie Tucker until the age of three when a neighbor, Juanita Gregory welcomed him into her loving home. George received his elementary and secondary education in Evansville graduating from Lincoln High School in 1959 and soon thereafter entered the military.
George proudly served his country in the United States Airforce for twenty six and a half years. His active duty began in August 1960 and he retired on December 1, 1986 as a highly decorated Senior Master Sergeant. Senior Master Sergeant Parrish served with honor and distinction on tours to K. I. Sawyer AFB in Marquette, Michigan, Kadena AFB in Okinawa, Japan, Travis AFB in Fairfield, California, Ramstein AFB, Miesenbach, Germany and his final station Lowry AFB in Denver, Colorado. After his retirement from the United States Airforce, George served as Executive Chef for Le Petit Gourmet Catering in Denver, Colorado and later as Assistant Chef for Occasions by Sandy in Englewood, Colorado.
During his active duty Senior Master Sergeant Parrish met and married his beautiful wife of 39 years, Juanita Mickens in Memphis, Tennessee. The couple exchanged vows on November 18, 1978. To their union two beautiful daughters were born Jareda Danielle Phenix (George) and Ruth Meshawn Parrish. He also had three daughters, Mary Parrish Triplet (Paris), Deborah Allen Boneta (Charles) and Shannon Watson (Arnold) from prior relationships. In later years, he became the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren and one great grandchild, whom endearingly called him “Papa”.
George and Juanita enjoyed traveling, the theatre and loyal service unto the Lord. He pampered Juanita with his culinary expertise as a chef and together they loved bringing the family together for cookouts. His granddaughters, Aiyana and Olivia were a source of joy and pride to his life. They loved to share laughter, shop, eat and travel with papa and nana. George was a devoted husband, devoted father and a true friend to all that were blessed to have known him. He loved life, he loved his family and he truly loved the Lord.
A man of faith in God, George was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church of Denver, Colorado since 1982. He served on the Deacon Board, Coordinator of the Children’s Church and Youth Ministries, Lecturer for the Shiloh Women’s Mission Ministry, Liaison Deacon for the Shiloh Women’s Department, New Member Orientation Instructor, and the Coordinator of the Pastor’s Aid Committee. Deacon Parrish’s commitment reached the national level beginning with his 10 year service as Director of Laymen for Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, he served as Laymen President of the Northern District Association, President of the Western States Laymen Movement of Colorado and Wyoming, on the National Laymen’s President Advisory Council and the President’s Council to the National Laymen Bible Ministry.
Deacon Parrish had a heart of gold and loved to help people as the word teaches us in Colossians, “clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” Through his civic service he was president of several Denver Elementary and Middle School PTA Boards. He served as Chairman for Special Services on The Denver Council PTA Board, Director of Leadership and Regional Service Team Representative for Colorado State Board of PTA and was a member of the Thomas Jefferson High School Collaboration Decision Making Council for Denver Public Schools.
On January 12, 2018, Deacon George Parrish concluded his life’s work, God called him to his eternal home and he received his crown. He leaves a legacy of loving memories with his devoted wife, Juanita, daughters Jareda Danielle Phenix (George) and Ruth Meshawn Parrish of Aurora Colorado, Mary Parrish Triplet (Paris), Deborah Allen Boneta (Charles) of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Shannon Watson (Arnold) of Valley Village, California, ten grandchildren, Aiyana, Olivia, Tamara, Paris, Theodore, Brittany, Courtney, Dekharai, Brandyn and Bryan and one great grandchild, Makai, a host of relatives and friends.
